Greenhouse
Students enrolled in The School at McGuire
Memorial's programs may take part in the on-site greenhouse.
Greenhouse experiences expand the students' horizons, giving them exposure
to new concepts, skills, and sensory experiences. Here, students who, having
lived their entire lives in a relatively sterile environment, can know what
it feels like to dig in the dirt, plant flowers, smell the plants and flowers,
and watch something of their own grow. They now have a chance to take care
of something of their own, having been taken care of all of their lives.
Basic skills such as grasping and holding a watering can are explored as well
as experiencing a new sensory stimuli such as the scent of flowers or the feel
of soil in one's hands. This component of the curriculum also helps build skills
in choice-making and responsibilities.
Vegetables grown in the greenhouse have been used for salads and meals. Many
students have presented—and won—ribbons at the local county fair
for their plants!
