Transition Program for Students with Autism (Ages 18 - 21)

The School at McGuire Memorial provides a program specifically for students with autism ages 18 - 21. The program is designed to prepare young adults with autism for participation in life after school. Individuals with autism may present inefficient communication systems, poor interactive skills, aggressive and/or self-abusive behaviors. McGuire Memorial's team of professionals determines and creates individualized programs of support based on current need and prior levels of educational and social experiences.

The program's core curriculum is comprised of:
  • applying basic educational fundamentals
  • acquiring marketable employment skills
  • instruction in social skills
  • enhancing communication skills
  • working toward self-determination
  • developing flexibility and tolerating change
All students are eligible for occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and positive behavioral support.

Students in this program, like all other students at The School at McGuire Memorial, participate in recreational aquatics at the on-site pool and take part in activities at the on-site greenhouse as part of their overall curriculum.
